'Becoming Rock ((Beach Rock)' (2018-2019) is one in a series of ongoing performative videos that explore the relationship between body and earth. The videos serve as a document of an attempt to embody or merge with the land, through the action of becoming a rock within the landscape. The repetition of these actions has become a kind of ritual or meditation within my artistic practice; a way to learn about and understand the earth via my body, over and over again. Within these actions there is an attempt at being present through the practice of listening, breathing, and feeling.
I am fully aware of the physical impossibility of merging with land, and see the exposure of each repeated attempt as an absurd, yet genuine, awkward, yet honest gesture to become with the land. Before we can truly be-with the Earth, we must first learn how to think-with by shifting perspectives on matter and what matters.
