Prologue to the Velvet Revolution
A Film by Corinne Aivazian, Filmed by Logan Irvine-MacDougall
In 2018, in the lesser know country of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan steered in a movement that empowered a disillusioned nation and brought down a corrupt government. Shooting for this film started on May 9th 2018, the day after Pashinyan became the de facto head of state. Seven days of passionate protests and not a single shot fired, the movement became known as The Velvet Revolution and suddenly this small, all but forgotten country in the Near East, was under the spotlight.
The world saw hope for a country with an epic, yet tragic history. But what of the 25 years since independence from the Soviet occupation that had led to this point? This film is a meditation, a musing that explores the vestiges held by the land. A visual exploration of Armenia's present day post-genocide, post-soviet landscapes, that merges historical narratives and mythology with first hand recollections as a way of trying to understand the countries complex identity.
Filmed in 2017 to 2018 at or around Zorats Karer,Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory, Metsamor Power Station, Lake Sevan , Mount Tsghuk, Syunik, Spitak and Lori Provinces
The film has not yet been released.
