A loving tribute to Harvey Cohen, the son of Benjamin and Fay, my adored grandparents.
May his memory be a blessing to everyone.
With Love,
Your Niece

Harvey Cohen. Probably age 9 in the last photo below. On October 20, 1935, Mervin, his younger brother, told his parents, Fay and Benny, that Harvey was having bad stomach aches. Their regular MD was away. The standing doctor told the parents that Harvey was probably nervous to go to school. Benny ending up taking Harvey to the Hospital. Sadly, Benny came back home without Harvey. Fay and Benny depended on sleeping pills for a long time to survive. Fay gave birth to mom, Paula Helene named after her sister who passed away young from Polio. Luckily Nana and grandpa had Mervin and mom to live for. Elaine, a cousin, a year younger, walked to school with Harvey, but one day, she was told, “There is no more Harvey Cohen.” Brutal message to a child. One line was so traumatic that we are repeating it 85 years later. Stories get pieced together from family as we get to know each other.

The tragedy changed our family forever. My grandmother, Fay had Paula’s and Mervin’s appendixs removed prophylacically to save their lives and live without that kind of worry. That was a bold and caring action especially for those times. I heard about Harvey my entire life. We don’t know who he would have grown up to be. But all his 9 years became 9 extra years for each one of us in my family and those who knew him. His spirit never dies.

Please share any stories and photos you have about Harvey. Nana used to call him a prize baby. He was so beautiful that his photo was in the newspaper. We are so grateful to have photographs of him. I visit him when we visit the rest of the family at the cemetary and still speak of him. I mention him at every Kaddish. Harvey, you are always in our hearts. Feb 28, 1926-October 20, 1935
Paula was born April, 1935. My mother never met Harvey, but his life and death impacted and defined her, me and future generations. Seeing his picture made it important for me to share his story. Social media can have its perks... Today it is a blessing. Now Harvey can touch all of you in this generation and your future generations even if by making a speck of change in your lives for the better with his life lesson.
More photos to follow. Today is Harvey day. Not his birthday, not a holiday, not an anniversary. Today is just a day as good as any other.

Life is short. We don’t know how short. Listen to your children. Listen to your siblings. Listen to your parents. Take lots of photos. Nana and Benny, hope you’re smiling. Love you always. And Merv, you, too. We already know how much I love mom.
