The piece, A Dream That Never Lived, is a combination of videos/images of police brutality towards black people, Black Lives Matter protests, and black individuals who had been murdered by police or as a result of police mistreatment. The videos/images play alongside Martin Luther King’s famous speech, I have a Dream. The video aims to show how even after the Civil Rights movement which freed Black people from the oppression of slavery, they remain inslaved by a justice system that aims to incarcerate at any given chance, and if they do not face incarceration then they face death. With every word MLK says, we see a contrasting image from the dream which he hopes come true in the near future. It shows a depressing reality that MLK’s dream is still a dream, even though the slavery of the 90s has been abolished.
