The second movement pair is abduction and adduction. Abduction is the action of moving a body segment away from the midline of the body. Using the shoulders and hips as examples, shoulder abduction brings the arm away from the midline of your body, while hip abduction brings the leg away from the midline of the body.
If you have understood abduction, just think of adduction as the opposite. Again, if we use the shoulders and hips to illustrate, shoulder adduction and hip adduction simply refers to bringing the arm and the hips closer to the midline of the body. Abduction and adduction can sometimes be confusing because they are spelt so similarly. To help you remember better, here is an easy way to think of it. Abduction comes from the word 'abduct', which means to take away. So when you hear 'abduction', think of aliens abducting you by pulling your arm, causing your arm to move further away from your midline. Also, because they are also pronounced so similarly, to avoid confusion, what you can do is this: when you mean to say abduction, you can say ay-bee-duction. and when you mean to say adduction, you can say ay-dee-duction. this helps to clear up awkward miscommunication when speaking with other personal trainers or healthcare professionals.
