Many months after the first cases of coronavirus were reported, The Salvation Army’s work continues to adapt and change to meet needs worldwide.

Recognising the impact of the virus on finances and employment, the provision of basic supplies is a priority in most places. In Greece, 300 food boxes and one hundred boxes containing diapers and wipes have been allocated amongst those in need. This project has partly been funded through partnerships with The Salvation Army in other countries. The organisation’s refugee day centre in Athens has reopened after reorganising the layout to allow better physical distancing.

A baseball stadium is being used as a distribution hub in the USA. The site, usually the home of the LA Dodgers, has been temporarily given over by the sports team to help distribute more than 40,000 meals to the local community.

A Salvation Army residence for young women in Argentina has been putting time in enforced quarantine to good use. Students of ‘La Aurora’ have volunteered to organise and prepare bags of non-perishable items, ready to be given to vulnerable people in the community.

Food and other essentials are being provided across the globe, including in Italy, the UK and Uruguay.

Reducing the spread of coronavirus continues to be a focus. In Belgium, one Salvation Army volunteer, Johanna, has worked with a team of six people to make 250 face masks. Having never sewn before, she has taught herself the necessary skills, created a successful prototype and arranged the supply of the materials needed. The group intends to distribute the masks to people who are homeless.

In Cambodia, a mask-making work party has been arranged to help with efforts to get these essential items into the community in the country’s capital, Phnom Penh.

Various methods to share information about the transmission of the virus are being employed in Tanzania. Printed banners and posters are on display, with flyers and bookmarks being given out. Messaging is also delivered via a public address system. This is alongside the provision of hand-washing stations in strategic locations.

The Salvation Army in Long Island, USA, held a virtual benefit concert on Facebook, using music to raise much-needed funds for its coronavirus response work. Local TV news anchor Carol Silva linked together archive and newly-recorded performances and appealed for donations from the public.

Please pray for the ongoing work of The Salvation Army around the world, as well as for all those affected by the pandemic.
