Repost from Instructor Adam Gallo. THE MISSION: Teach 8 folks with little to no kickboxing experience a ten-strike kickboxing combo in under one hour from proper stance to round kicks. Typically, this is not how it works. In standard conditions, time is a luxury afforded. We usually spend countless mundane hours drilling mechanics, patterning, theory and strike application with the ultimate goal of making these concepts applicable in real life scenarios (sparring, self-defense, and competition). Teaching at Rancho La Puerta has been a unique challenge in that I have to condense a lifetime of concepts into one hour. Is it possible to turn these fine folks into wildly effective martial artists in this time? Absolutely not, and this is far from the point. Instead, it is an excellent opportunity to demystify combat sports, expose people to modalities previously unexplored, to boost body confidence and spatial awareness. I’m always impressed with how quickly people grasp these concepts. I love the work I do, and teaching in this format, although being a departure from the norm, has definitely made me a far more effective coach and communicator.
