Opening Question: ?? If we are to be more like Christ, should we be setting spiritual goals ?? What would those look like ??
- Consistent time in the Word and prayer (times/week or minutes/day)
- Study with your family, spouse, or friend
- Sharing joy or truth with someone (so many/week)
- Goal for pursuing God’s purposes in our rest & relaxation time (entertainment, healthy activity, true rest)
- SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-based)
Last Week: We find joy in humility.
This Week: Believers gain joy through knowing Jesus and living in obedience to Him.
CONTEXT:
- Paul is humble about his background
- Even though he was trained in the Law and was regarded as an accomplished Hebrew, his main focus now is on knowing and becoming more like Christ
- He wants that to be the main focus of the Philippian church too
READ Phil 3:7-11
?? Is Paul saying that his past is worthless ??
- He isn’t bashing his past accomplishments
- But they don’t get him any closer to righteousness
- Nothing “good” we do can save us
?? What is most valuable to Paul ??
- Knowing Christ, having a relationship with Him
- Paul wants to understand and be like Christ
?? What does it mean to Paul to “know Christ” ??
- 1) Have faith in Him alone for righteousness
- Putting complete trust in Christ’s work, not our own (successes & failures don’t define us)
- God GIVES us righteousness, we don’t EARN it
- 2) Rely on Christ’s power to make us NEW
- He raises from the dead, heals sickness, cures sin, gives us a new heart & passion - His Strength
- 3) Being willing to Suffer for Christ
- Not pursuing a comfortable, easy, self-centered life, but serving others at the expense of ourselves
?? Do you have this type of relationship with Christ ??
- 1) Complete dependence on Him
- 2) Spiritual power driving you
- 3) No fear of discomfort - denying yourself
- This is a difficult place to get to & to stay in
- Laying aside the things of our “worldly” life
- Spiritual Maturity - it should be our goal
READ Phil 3:12-14
?? Is Paul perfect ??
- Far from it!
- He too is still a work in progress
- We won’t be made complete until our resurrection
- We are a work-in-progress
?? How does Paul deal with his imperfectness ??
- He tries to focus on Why Christ saved him
- He leaves the past behind (both good & bad)
- He strains toward Christ’s future goals for him
?? What do you think Jesus’ goals are for Paul, and for us ??
- To be Holy - pure & blameless, like Christ
- Displaying the Fruits of the Spirit
- Loving God & Loving others
- Serve Eternal Kingdom Purposes
?? How often do you think about eternity ??
- It is our destiny to be with God, forever serving Him
- We can start doing that Right Now
- It is a challenge, but it is worth the struggle
- We should be pursuing Christ’s Goals
READ Phil 3:15-21
?? What advice is Paul giving the church in verses 15&16 ??
- Mature believers should pursue the things I’m pursuing - eternal goals & rewards
- There will be disagreements or things you don’t understand, but don’t let that slow you down
- Live out what you do understand
- Bear fruit now
- God will continue to help you grow
?? Paul gives us some warnings here. How are people distracted from Christ’s goals ??
- By loving themselves
- Pursuing what they want (filling their stomachs, satisfying their appetites, seeking selfish glory)
- By focusing on earthly things
- This only leads to death & destruction
- Many of these enemies were “religious”
?? In what ways can we keep from being distracted ??
- Imitating Paul as He is imitating Christ
- Pay attention to spiritually mature, godly people
- By remembering our identity in Christ & future destiny - being resurrected & made perfect
?? Who are we ??
- We are already citizens of heaven
- We don’t belong here on earth anymore - aliens
- We should LONG for Christ - not just a feeling
- Live out this longing by pursuing His goals now
Believers gain joy through knowing Jesus and living in obedience to Him.
