"Second consumption" is a way of expressing the cost of mass agricultural food production on the forest, and a metaphor of deforestation. With as much as 17% of the rainforest lost already, experts estimate that the last remaining forests could be consumed in less than 40 years. An area of Amazon rainforest roughly the size of a football pitch is now being cleared every single minute. The cattle sector of the Brazilian Amazon, incentivized by the international beef and leather trades, has been responsible for about 80% of all deforestation in the region, or about 14% of the world's total annual deforestation, making it the world's largest single driver of deforestation. The amazon rainforest has long been destroyed and burned to fuel the expansion of animal husbandry to meet our lifestyle and needs. Therefore, we are eating the Amazon rainforest.
This project brings remote forest destruction into our lives. I chose the activated charcoal pill, that maintains our digestive system, as a vehicle to expose the causes of forest destruction. Visitors can use the activated carbon powder made from Amazon trees, and a series of cold tools I designed to make an activated carbon pill which could maintain their health. The process of making and eating activated charcoal tablets mimics the process of forest production and consumption of beef. Eventually, you take the pill and you get better, but the forest gets worse.
"Second consumption" reveals the truth about deforestation, thus arousing, resonating, and affecting reflection within visitors to the exhibition.
