We can't rely on physical testing because we would need to drive an autonomous vehicle for billions of miles to be sure that it is safe. But, the problem isn't just the number of miles. What we really need to test is how the vehicle handles edge cases.

An edge case is one where something unusual or unexpected happens. It could be something as common as a vehicle pulling out in front of you or as rare as an aircraft landing on the road. We need to be sure that our autonomous vehicles can handle these situations.
