Globe Trotting, is an example of a sundial, moondial, clock and compass. My research for Afterlife Spaces had taken me to the Chester County Historical Society. There was an exhibition on clocks. It was about the relationship of sundials - as the earliest form of time, to grandfather clocks - as the modern invention of time. The circular format continued for me into a compass which was located in the next room. My installation uses the basketball court with the half court line as the Equator. South, West and East are small mirror lights with North as the projector. The carpet is homemade astroturf spray painted green. A cube made of 12” x 12” mirrors were assembled as the center of the face. The circular dial is a rotating cake stand. The dial is a sword with antennas attached at the handle. The materials feel a little absurd but I think that is what makes this project amusing. Thinking about time as a playoff feels necessary. This work engages the viewer as an active participant in a tournament of direction. Basketball is a game of endurance with a range of motion, a flexible wrist and an option for a timeout.
