This video consists of a continuous loop depicting dark clouds moving across the sky on which the following phrase is displayed in four parts:
WHENEVER / I SEE YOU / I TRY NOT / TO BE AFRAID
The background of an ominously threatening sky is intended to act as a metaphor for the ever- present sense of menace and uncertainty that confronts so many on a daily basis. The COVID pandemic is an obvious and dramatic example. What were previously safe and pleasurable situations that we took for granted - the embrace of a friend, a stroll in public, the joys of small dinner gatherings, and the excitement of larger gatherings such as weddings, sports events, and performances - have all but been eliminated from our lives and replaced with a pre-occupying sense of threat and foreboding. The physical closeness that we relished is now something we have come to fear.
All of this has coincided with the expression of a rage against other life-disturbing forces such as racism, a reprehensible array of forms of discrimination, police brutality and the abuse of children and spouses, all of which instill fear and undermine a fundamental sense of peace and personal security for so many within our society. The objective of this work is to draw attention to the profound but hidden fears that so many must cope with on a daily basis.
