TRANSCRIPT: “Let’s go DPS!”

It’s been a long time coming.

“Here we go Vikings, here we go!”

A state championship, out of Denver Public Schools. (Cheers) For not one, not two…

“W-A-R-R-I-O-R-S…”

Not three…

“What a great day to celebrate champions of Denver Public Schools

But *SIX* DPS teams and student-athletes, across the city.

“We’re talking six state championships! Let’s give these people a round of applause for doing something that not many cities can celebrate!”

Through the pandemic. The toughest year.

“And these young people have persevered. They have demonstrated what it means to be resilient. To stay together. To stay focused.”

Canceled events and seasons. Lost loved ones.

“So in the midst of all of our challenges, they gave us a tremendous ray of hope and reason to celebrate.”

From the pool, at Denver North High School

“The bonds and friendships created in the water are the ones that push and encourage us to be better.”

“Fight Spartans, Fight!”

To the mat – where DPS student-athletes at Denver East and Thomas Jefferson High Schools claimed three individual state titles.

“I’m grateful for my family, my coaches, teammates. Anyone who’s ever supported me to get to this point.”

“Umm…” (Someone yells, “Two time!”)
“Had a… well yeah, I did win it two times!”
(laughs and applause)

“We didn’t get as much time as we usually do. But I mean, we pushed through it. My teammates helped me out. My coach did as much as he could so we could get the best out of our season.”

And of course, the football field – and *two* state championships in football. From Thomas Jefferson High School in Class 4A…

“What a day, man. It’s almost giving me… THE HEEBIE GEEBIES again, ya know what I’m saying?”
(Laughs and cheers)

“I also thank all our coaches for doing the little things. Staying up until the early hours of the morning watching film. Helping us be as successful as possible, making us better men along the way. So, thank you guys so much.”

And from Far Northeast Denver in Class 5A:

“Congratulations warriors!” (cheers)

The Warriors of montbello.

“The state championship really meant more than just football. It meant more about just bringing our school and bringing our people back together. Because as coach Lindsay always told me, there’s more to come. And there’s always going to be more to come.”

“Uh this is really big what we did for our community. Our first one. 5a state championship. It’s legendary!”

And It’s history - as both Far Northeast and TJ represent the first football state titles out of DPS in more than 30 years. And fitting, for history:

“And we raised a little money. Just over 10,000 dollars to get your championships rings (cheers and applause) we want you to get championship rings!” (applause)

Congratulations to true champions, through it all.

“And showing us all what resilience, confidence, teamwork, and power really, really means. Congrats to you all, we’re very proud.” (applause)
