A short film for Belmar History + Art

Unhurried and timeless, a couple travels between ocean and house, spirit and flesh. They embody hope and loss through postures of emergence and erasure. This visual journey stages the body as an archive of past, present and future. It is a reclamation for Black families who built and lost their homes by the sea. It is a conjuring of memory, of futures dreams.

Filmed at Bay Street Beach, also known as The Inkwell, “A Resurrection in Four Stanzas” art sculpture and Palisades Beach. Funded in part by Santa Monica Cultural Affairs.

BELONGING will premiere at Wade in the Water along with six other short films that celebrate Black culture and water from spiritual practices to sports and migration. The outdoor screening will take place at Historic Belmar Park, the former site of a thriving Black community called Belmar that was razed by eminent domain in the 1950s.
