Historian Dr. Alison Rose Jefferson and artist April Banks, along with other members of the community, introduce Belmar History + Art, a commemoration and celebration centered on the African American experience in Santa Monica from the early 20th century to the present.

With an initial focus on the Belmar neighborhood, a historically diverse community that was razed and erased from the maps in order to build the Santa Monica Civic Center campus in the 1950s, the project will create new interpretive signage, an educational program, and art elements through a community engagement process at the site of the upcoming Civic Multipurpose Sports Field.
