Slowtide spent a day in LA with renowned photographer and lifetime Lakers fan, Atiba Jefferson, to celebrate the launch of their recent NBA partnership. Slowtide has long-since admired Jefferson’s photography and loved learning more about his career. Marrying two of the things he loves most, skating and basketball, Jefferson has been able to turn his passions into a career.

Jefferson built an incredible path for himself; originally from Colorado, he eventually made his way out west to California. At twenty years old, he would sneak his camera into Lakers games. But he was always trying to get more access. He finally had the opportunity to work with Andy Bernstein, the Lakers photographer at the time. Bernstein taught him how to frame a story through photos, something Jefferson later took with him to skate photography.

As his career progressed, Jefferson was able to shoot for Slam magazine, a completely different atmosphere. There, players were more “untucked,” wearing their own clothes and jewelry. It was in environments like these that Jefferson was able to form even deeper connections. Because they were the same age and shared interests, Jefferson easily clicked with Kobe Bryant. He appreciated Kobe’s creative thinking and willingness to get involved in the shoots.

As a fan, you can find Jefferson dressed in head-to-toe Lakers gear at games, drinking beer and eating pretzels. But he proudly insists that there is no better experience than being at a Lakers game shooting.
