While re-watching Snowpiercer for a different project I was struck by the similarities between it and George Miller’s return to his Mad Max franchise Fury Road. It wasn’t just the similarities of the story, both featuring oppressed people rising up against their oppressors set mainly in the enclosed space of a vehicle, but also the aesthetics of the two films. Two scenes in particular stuck out to me: Curtis’s breakdown in the engine of the train and Furiosa’s anguish upon discovering the demise of the Green Place. Both moments capture the protagonist falling to their knees and demonstrating a complete loss of hope, albeit in different ways. This led me to search for more parallels between the two culminating in a video depicting scenes side by side to compare both the visual and thematic elements of the films.
