"Good morning, Panda Tribe! Thanks for tuning in! Man, what an interesting, challenging, yet rewarding year 2018 has been for myself and the Panda Tribe. Although I personally have had one of the more difficult years of my young life, I couldn’t be more excited about the accomplishments and accolades from the Panda Tribe over the past 12 months. It has truly been a year of success for many of our athletes and ambassadors, and I’m eager to tell you all about it. I might as well start at the top:
First off, Alex Hall. This guy! Not only did he find himself in the 2018 olympic games, representing the US Slopestyle Team, but he has put himself on the podium multiple times, with a World Cup win in Silvapana, Switzerland last March, and a Dew Tour win just a few weeks ago. As far as superstars in the Panda Tribe, Alex is about as super as they get! Keep your eye on Alex in 2019!
Also representing for the Panda Tribe at the 2018 Olympics was Panda High Council member Chris Turpin. Head Coach for team China’s freestyle program, this is the second time Turpin has taken his multi-decades-worth of progressive ski wisdom to the Olympics.
Another notable up-and-comer is our homeboy Luke Miele. Although he’s only been with the Tribe for two seasons, he has carried our magic ski wands onto the podium more times than we can count! Nailing 3rd place overall for the IFSA U12 Nationals, Luke crushed the top spot at a whopping 4 competitions last season, taking 1st in his age category at Targhee, Snowbird, Stowe, and Sugarbush. Regardless of his age, Luke is already exhibiting signs of a World Champ!
Next up, Alban Mao. Although mostly unknown and mostly unassuming at first glance, Panda Ambassador Alban Mao is the world’s fastest telemark skier, taking the Tele Speed World Record of 188.5 Kmh last April in Vars, France. Honored to know this record currently rests with one of our very own. You’re a beast, Alban!
After a successful 3 year career skiing on the Freeride World Tour, Panda Poles co-founder Oakley White-Allen started coaching for the Alta/Snowbird Freeride team in 2016. Last year he was promoted to the head coach position, helping guide two athletes to spots in the 2019 Worlds, and one athlete to a 2018 N. American Championship. The world can rest safe knowing that the youth are learning from the wisdom of OWA. He is a true ski master and humble friend.
As well as podiums and records, we couldn’t be more stoked with our international media presence. At the forefront of our media coverage is Angel Collinson and Drew Tabke.
Landing a leading role in the 2018 MSP Film “All In”, Angel had her debut season filming with Matchstick Productions, as well as having countless photos published in Powder magazine, a cover on Ski Journal, and winner of Powder Awards Reader’s Poll! She continues to progress the image of female strength and grace in action sports.
Although he may not have had the best season in rankings, Panda High Council member Drew Tabke is always a crowd favorite on the Freeride World Tour. Having one of the most memorable runs of all-time last season--sending easily one of the largest backflips in FWT history--Drew’s incredible line was sadly snubbed on the cattrack at the bottom. Heartbreaking finish to arguably one of the most incredible FWT lines to date! At least Drew got almost a million views with his video on GoPro’s Instagram Page! Next time, Drew! Next time… Regardless, Drew is always one of the top producing athletes in the game, and never has a ‘bad season’ no matter what place he ends up.
As much as we love seeing the success of our athletes through competition and media exposure, some of my favorite accomplishments from the Tribe are the stories of people’s commitment to their love of skiing and adventure. With their dad TR leading the charge, Maks and Owen Page have been skiing every month for over 2 years straight! Cruising the Pacific NW in their RV, aptly named “The GnarV”, Maks has hiked and skied at least one day every month for the last 30 months, and Owen with 25 straight. This family trio is a continual inspiration for how to raise kids in a wholesome, expansive way. Honored to have the Page Boys taking us along for the ride!
And lastly, you may have already noticed, but I cut my hair. It’s not an accomplishment necessarily, but after 7 years since my last real chop, it’s been a notable shift in my life.
I’m know I’m leaving out so many other notable accomplishments from the Tribe over this last year. I really could probably go on and on, but I only have so much time to make this video. To all those who have been a part of making our Tribe the amazing community that it is, we send our wishes for an abundant, joyful, adventurous, and rad 2019. Thanks for sharing your vibes with us. We feel the love for sure!
Tribe UP!"
