Sarabande’s Zine Lunch! presents “From Form: On the Poetic Line,” a free zine workshop with John James. What constitutes the poetic line and what can it do? Though the line by itself is simple — Robert Hass calls it “naked” — it combines with other lines to create endless possibilities for imaginative and sonic play. In this workshop, we will explore how technical strategies (length, constitution, and grammatical/syntactic autonomy) affect our experience of the poetic line and how that experience changes as lines accumulate to generate poetic “form.” Readings may include passages and short lyrics by Brian Teare, C. S. Giscombe, Rae Armantrout, and others.

For this workshop you will need:
- plain white paper
- notebook and pen/pencil OR laptop computer
- recommended: Robert Hass's A Little Book on Form

John James is the author of The Milk Hours (Milkweed, 2019), selected by Henri Cole for the Max Ritvo Poetry Prize. His poems appear in Boston Review, Kenyon Review, Gulf Coast, Best American Poetry, and elsewhere, and his work has been supported by the Bread Loaf Environmental Writers Conference, the Academy of American Poets, and Georgetown University's Lannan Center for Poetics and Social Practice. He is pursuing a PhD in English and Critical Theory at the University of California, Berkeley. jj-poetry.com.
