Electromagnetic Field Theory or EMT aka Electromagnetics deals with the study of Electromagnetic Waves and related topics like transmission lines, antennas etc. Highly competitive exams like GATE and ESE requires the sound knowledge Electric Fields, Magnetic Fields, Maxwell's equations and ultimately how do we reach to the EM waves, further their transmission, reflection etc.

If you really wish to understand EMT thoroughly, you must be very good at the prerequisite basics. You must know how any point or vector is represented using any Coordinate System viz Cartesian, Cylindrical and Spherical. You must know how the coordinate variables are defined in these Systems along with their ranges. You should be able to interchange the representation of the given point/vector within these systems.

Besides Coordinate Systems, you must have in depth knowledge of line, surface and volume integration. These integrations are needed at each and every point in the process of learning EMT. You might be knowing these integrations already, but here for Electromagnetics, you would be applying them to solve EMT problems.

Other key basic concept for understanding EMT is differentiation. In EMT it is Gradient, Divergence and Curl. These are very useful while deriving the maxwell’s equations, wave equations, etc.
