When co-producer Terry Kaldhusdal interviewed his brother, Pete, for Consider the Conversation, Pete knew he was dying of pancreatic cancer. He had received the diagnosis from his physician, who then referred him to hospice.

In "What's Next?" Pete shares his personal thoughts on what lay ahead for him as he grapples with the unexpected turn of events in his life. He speaks from the perspective of a relatively young, well-educated man who grew up in a white, conservative, middle-class family on the West Coast. He refers to how past events and experiences influenced his expectations and assumptions for the future—and how those beliefs are holding up as he struggles to understand “What’s next?” for him after learning he was sick.

Pete’s question, “What’s next?” can be interpreted in several ways. On one level, it is about medical prognostication and the importance of providing patients with a realistic preview of what is likely to happen as the disease progresses and the various care options that are available. On another level, it indicates the importance of addressing emotional, social and spiritual issues.
