Mentors help women in academic science grow, thrive, and advance in their careers by connecting them with potential collaborators and supporting both professional and personal growth. Having mentors during college is one of the best predictors of women’s reported involvement in a STEM major, however, access to intentional, inclusive, and effective mentoring experiences are far too rare. For all the effort academic institutions have spent formalizing the education and training of budding STEM professionals, mentorship has largely been expected to happen organically or on an ad hoc basis. There is a science of mentorship and a well-developed literature base that shows the importance of mentorship and how to do it better. This event will provide an overview of research from a 2019 National Academies report on the science of effective mentorship and explore the first-hand mentorship experiences of a distinguished group of early-career women researchers who have been recognized by L’Oréal USA for their contributions to STEM fields and commitment to serving as role models for younger generations.
