As part of my “Documentary: Histories and Practices” unit at Bristol University, our end of unit assessment involved making a 4 - 8 minute documentary film in small groups. The assessment’s brief composed of making a documentary which responded to the theme of colonisation (what we might call colonially), due to the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower in 1620.

In my group, composed of Carly Pearce, Emily Jones and Mivi Studman-Badillo, and myself (Luke Hardwick), our film developed into an observational-expository documentary following the current-developing UCU strike action at the University of Bristol.

From the picket line to the rallies of the early-2020 UCU strikes, the film initially was made in order to explore how the strikes have impacted staff and students, whether strike action achieves its aims (in retrospect to the Miners strikes) and assess whether the current UCU strikes will be a success after their 2nd industrial action in less than 6 months.

Throughout the development of the films, much of what was documented was ‘in-the-moment’ which evidently involved documenting the impact of COVID-19 on the university and in-turn leading to an ‘unintentional’ strike of university education. Much of our film was ‘turned upside-down’ leading to rearranged interviews, an ever-changing film narrative, film edits being constructed remotely, and much more…

Initially, this documentary was supposed to be developed into a fully-fleshed-out film but due to the unexpected circumstances of COVID-19 causing difficulties in the film’s production, the final assessment production was submitted as a ‘production portfolio’.

The Production Portfolio consisted of a ‘work-in-progress’ documentary film (which you’re watching right now), all our pre-production and production materials, treatments, rough cut progression and many more features.

Overall, this assessed piece of group work achieved a 1st.

Created as part of the University of Bristol's ‘Documentary: Histories & Practices’ unit in Film & TV (2019/20 Term 2 - 2020).

Created by Luke Hardwick, Carly Pearce, Emily Jones and Mivi Studman-Badillo.

My personal role mainly specialised as pre-production/production producer and editor although this project was largely a group effort where all our own individual work is reflected throughout (and not just in one specialised area).
