Last Christmas, Elisabeth, 42, was told she wouldn't live much longer and the recurrence of breast cancer she was facing was deemed “incurable” and “inoperable”. Family, friends and even strangers (via a Go Fund Me campaign) came together to raise the funds necessary for Elisabeth to complete advanced chemo and surgery in the US. They saved her life. Today, Elisabeth is cancer free, defying her original prognosis from the Norwegian hospital. To keep her healthy, the team of US doctors have recommended Proton Radiation, a new form of radiation therapy that is not yet offered in Norway (but scheduled to arrive in 2023). The Norwegian doctor who first told Elisabeth she wouldn't survive, got on her side and wrote an application to “Utenlandskontoret”, the Norwegian medical department of foreign medical care, suggesting they pay for Elisabeth’s Proton therapy in New York. Utenlandskontoret has not yet formally answered the application, less than a week before the treatment is supposed to start, even though it was labeled “urgent”. What is the hold up, you might ask? A small team of doctors at the radiation department at Radiumhospitalet voted “NO!”. This answer was given provisionally by phone. According to the Norwegian Cancer Society, any Norwegian who needs Proton Therapy abroad has the right to it. Then why has Elisabeth been told her life is not worth saving even though the law and technology is available to do so?
