My film piece is a drama about perspective and mental health. Unnoticed is purposefully written in a way that looks like Rosie has mental health issues, but in actual fact it’s the opposite way around and it is Katie who is struggling. It is meant to cast a light on the reality that those who are perceived to have zero mental health problems may actually not be doing so well and hide it. Furthermore, my film is meant to show that as a society we should all check in on our friends, family and everyone else in between to make sure that they are doing okay and that mental health problems do not go unnoticed.

Rosie’s character is more reserved and has a stereotypical teenage outlook when it comes to emotions and mental health. This stereotype being that teenagers should conceal and push down how they feel. It is after Katie prompts her and creates a safe environment for Rosie to talk. This allows her to become vulnerable and open up about her feelings. This can teach the audience how to get someone to open up and talk about their feelings.

The use of mise-en-scène is something I tried to experiment with in Unnoticed. Rosie is seen wearing gothic clothes. I drew inspiration from the character of Allison Reynolds from ‘The Breakfast Club’. This outfit choice also can be seen as symbolic for depression. Furthermore, her leather jacket gives her character more of a rebellious look. This contrasts with Katie who is seen wearing appropriate uniform and is also wearing a white shirt.

I played about with camera technique as well, in particular framing. In the over the shoulder shots looking at Katie, she can be seen to be sat in a gap in the blinds which causes a beam of light to be positioned exactly where she is sat. Lighting also worked in my favour for this shot as the lighting created a yellow tone. This is symbolic of the fact that she is perceived to be happy and have no mental health struggles, however, this is then revealed to be false and that she is struggling with mental health issues.
