Delivering unrivalled volume and power, the Lambeg drum is incredibly unique in the percussion world. Not only does its sheer size (around three foot in diameter) makes it stand out in a crowd, but the materials used to construct the drum, as well as its shape and the way it is struck can all contribute to its distinctive sound.

In this video, Orchestral Percussionist Kieran Leonard discusses the science behind the Lambeg drum and how its famous ‘wall of sound’ is achieved.

‘The Science of the Lambeg Drum’ is the next instalment in the Ulster-Scots Music Traditions series which looks at the history and culture of the Lambeg Drum and Fife. The series is produced by Third Street Studios in partnership with the Ulster-Scots Agency, and with support from Northern Ireland Screen’s Ulster-Scots Broadcast Fund.
