Just a little intro to topic two. We just finished investigating the selfie and the art of self-portraiture. We looked at three artists spanning the centuries: Albrect Dürer, Vincent van Gogh, and Cindy Sherman. We questioned their motivations behind making self-images. We saw that Dürer's purpose was to sell and he did. He was very successful, well-rewarded for the skill that he honed. We learned that Van Gogh was more interested in internal reflection. He allowed his materials to trace his emotive state and make what was inside real and visible, and he was not commercially rewarded for this, he died a poor man. We saw that Cindy Sherman chased after something different. Her purpose was personal but was more political and psychological in its public reception. She used media much the same as we had available to us when we made our self-portraits with our smart technology. That she is very successful as an artist for what she does is another matter related to the economics of art. Is she too different than Van Gogh? Is she concerned with glamorizing her self-image in order to capitalize off her skill like Dürer?

Very good. Now we are going in to see the original mark makers, the early modern humans of the Paleolithic era. Why did they mark their cave walls, what was the significance of this act, what do their images communicate to us? Let's see what our investigations bring to us.
