Creating an accurate likeness of a sitter continues to be one of the portrait artist's greatest challenges. Learning the structure and anatomy of the head can lead to significant development in the artists approach to this demanding genre. Taught by MFA Faculty member, Roberto Osti, this interactive, online course is intended to provide the fundamental and indispensable elements of the structure and anatomy of the head for any artist interested in portraiture and in mastering this challenging yet fascinating subject.

In this 4-day course, students will learn the essential stereometric, structural and anatomical aspects of the head: the main volumes and landmarks of the skull, the plains and the muscles of the face and neck, the positioning of the facial features, and how to apply these notions to the practice of drawing the human head.

Finally, the participants will also have the opportunity to practice a few essential drawing techniques and methods: structural and tonal drawing, drawing on toned paper, reduction technique and trois crayons technique.

Students will draw during the Zoom demonstrations and outside of class time. The students will also have access to the recorded Zoom sessions for the duration of the workshop and one week afterward.

Osti's book “Basic Human Anatomy”, the Monacelli Press can be useful but is not required. In this book , you can find many images and charts that deal in depth with various aspects of anatomy for figure drawing and can help you continue study the subject afterward.
