L'Orchestre national de Quarantaine (Spitfire Audio's BBSCO, Solo Strings, Òlafur Arnalds Chamber Evolutions, Albion Neo, LCO Textures, Masse, Marimba Swarm, Harp Swarm, Albion Tundra and Hans Zimmer Piano libraries) performing "The Lovers"; a lush and romantic cue for solo theremin, cello and orchestra. I based this off of a one-take-per-part improvisation I had done over a year ago that I really enjoyed but was too loose and unrefined to really get behind.

One challenge of reworking a fully improvised performance, is trying to maintain that magic spark that happens when you're feeling more than you're thinking, but I'm pretty content with the result here. As all the instruments performed here (except the theremin) are samples, it is paramount to keep each part moving and expressive— that means there's a lot of programming of Dynamic, Vibrato, Tempo and Velocity.

Another challenge is blending the samples (which were expertly recorded by the geniuses at Spitfire Audio with multiple microphones in beautiful halls) with my theremin, which I recorded direct-in in my little studio— that means the theremin's signal is not captured in any 'space' and I have to find a way to make it feel like its in the same room as everyone else.

As for the theremin, I'm using a Moog Etherwave standard, modified with Thierry Frenkel ESP01 chip— without his chip, the Moog theremin is not a real musical instrument. I also calibrate my theremin so it goes substantially higher than Moog sets up their instruments at the factory. Without doing so, or sourcing an Etherwave Pro, I wouldn't have been able to perform Auerbach's Icarus last year with the McGill Symphony Orchestra. I greatly prefer this high soprano type sine-wave sound than the more traditional Clara Rockmore saw-wave sound.
