In the corner of Ellen Dischinger's Glen Lake Elementary Kindergarten classroom you will find "The Lake," a space meant for self-regulation and calming down. The Lake has comfortable seating and a bag of calming tools such as stress balls, books, and a Hoberman Sphere. Students go to the Lake when they are feeling strong emotions and as the year goes on they begin to better understand their emotions and use the space without being instructed to. Calming spaces like The Lake teach students life-long skills in self-regulation and emotional understanding. As Ellen puts it: "self-regulation has to happen before learning can happen."
