The Japanese paper fan interactive exhibit in the MAAS museum aims to facilitate a deeper appreciation for the object and demonstrate its use in history. This exhibit is targeted towards the general public interested in Japanese history, art and culture. The visitor will be able to engage with a replica of the fan physically and virtually which introduces both an element of tactility and allows them to gain first hand experience of how and the context where it was used.
In the VR space, interactors partake in a simulation of being a Kabuki actor and utilising the fan and its story to perform. They learn a form of dance called mitate which is when the actor substitutes one prop for another for instance, a fan replacing a boat oar.
Upon completing or while waiting for the VR experience, interactors are invited to design their own fans on a nearby DIY table. Visitors can refer to a symbolic reference sheet provided on the table which enables them to learn about the object from the designer’s perspective.

This project was developed under the guidance of studio leaders and demonstrators. As a response to a notional assessment brief, it is not directly connected to the Powerhouse Museum.
