A case study focusing on how we leveraged user-centred design principles to help the YMCA build solidarity across their different communities and transform their organization during the pandemic. For a bit of context, the Charlotte YMCA is one of the largest in the United States with 20 locations and a $100m annual operating revenue. Their vision is to be a catalyst to transform lives and communities.

The pandemic has created a lot of uncertainty for them and has impacted their ability to fully serve the various communities in Charlotte. In the most underserved communities, the pandemic has exacerbated the various issues they live with on a daily basis: food insecurity, health care access, early care & education, transportation, and the digital divide become an even larger issue with most of the school system holding classes virtually.

It became clear that their current operating model didn’t work with the restrictions related to the pandemic so they reached out to see how EY could support the creation of an innovative new operating model that would allow them to better support communities.

For the next 45 minutes, I’ll walk you through the challenges in more detail, the approach we’re taking, some of the immediate outcomes we’ve seen, and defining what a transformative future could look like.
