A laser beam is pointed at a two-sided spinning variable speed concave mirror. Each side of the mirror produces a different sound due to each mirrors unique characteristics. The laser hits a light sensor that is amplified to produce a sound with each passing light wave.
I built this in honor of the astronomer Jocelyn Burnell.
Burnell Is responsible for one of the most important astrophysics discoveries of the 20th century: the radio pulsar. The discovery, which she made as graduate student, earned a Nobel Prize in 1974. And it could one day form the basis of a "galactic positioning system" for navigating outside our solar system. But Bell Burnell didn't collect the Nobel. Instead, the award went to her supervisor at the University of Cambridge, Antony Hewish. She is now recognized as the pioneer who made this breakthrough discovery.
I am experimenting with:
The speed of light and sound
Reactive technology
Sonification is the use of non-speech audio to convey information or perceptualize data. Auditory perception has advantages in temporal, spatial, amplitude, and frequency resolution that open possibilities as an alternative or complement to visualization techniques. In this instance, Hearing Light, giving voice to light if you will.
Synesthesia is a neurological condition in which information meant to stimulate one of your senses stimulates several of your senses.
Light waves triggering sound waves. A hybrid wave transference system.
In radio astronomy, a fast radio burst (FRB) is a transient radio pulse of length ranging from a fraction of a millisecond to a few milliseconds, caused by some high-energy astrophysical process not yet understood.
Light, sound, electromagnetic, earthquakes and water all travel in waves. I am especially interested in wave interference.
Nothing that contains energy is “outside of time.” Waves carry energy through empty space or through a medium without transporting matter. While all waves can transmit energy through a medium, certain waves can also transmit energy through empty space. A medium is a material through which waves can travel. It can be a solid, liquid, or gas. A wave is a repeating disturbance or vibration that transfers or moves energy from place to place. An earthquake for instance.
A wave of energy in a crowd, a riot, society demanding change.
Since both the speed of rotation and the distance to the mirror were well established, it was possible to measure the difference between the angle of the light as it entered the apparatus and when it exited the setup, and calculate the speed of light from that. Foucault concluded in 1862 that the speed of light was 299,796 kilometers per second.
In these anti-intellectual and anti-science times, one can’t, after all, erase facts from history. The earth is not flat nor the moon, vaccinations stop pandemics, evolution is factual and happening, not all conspiracies are real, the earth is warming, religions are based on myths, gravity is real, all peoples deserve equal rights and opportunities. I am going back in time, when the sciences and the arts were one (metaphysics if you will), to the fundamentals of how the universe works, how we observe it and how the cosmos functions. When we are out of sync with the universes, we are doomed.
