This is the fifth of six lectures in a cooperative education project between the Denmark-based Necessary Teacher Training College, DNS, and TFF - Transnational Foundation for Peace & Future Research in Lund, Sweden.

Follow the project and register for this and coming seminars here: dns-tvind.dk/online-courses/

Like the other seminars, this starts with a lecture by Jan Oberg and then comes a global Zoom-inar with discussions of the content.

Oberg starts out with his own close relation to (former) Yugoslavia and goes through its immense complexity and also explains why its dissolution was not, at the roots, an ethnic conflict. He emphasises that Yugoslavia was unique, not well understood by the EU and NATO countries and that, unfortunately, its conflicts developed at a time when NATO had chosen a "triumphalistic" policy after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact in 1989-1990.

Nobody was available to help the people in Yugoslavia to either split into independent countries or keep together as one - peacefully. He also argues, towards the end, that the conflicts in this part of the Balkans have influenced Europe more than the fall of the Berlin Wall and split a lot of people, organisations and principles and has further undermined the UN and international law.

All along he emphasizes that NATO should have been dissolved when the Warsaw Pact and the Soviet Union were, and that it is a dangerous, outdated alliance that violates its own Treaty on a daily basis. Its expansion up to the very borders of today's Russia was a breach of promises made to Gorbachev and should never have happened - which is the main reason we have a new 2nd Cold War in Europe when we could have had a new common security all over.
