Originally given as a welcome talk to participants in the Connected Learning Journey Retreat of March 2020, this presentation is one of three thought pieces on the state of science today, as seen through the eyes of Kennan Salinero, principal founder of ReImagine Science. Kennan shares her thoughts about the conditions of scientific inquiry in academic settings, likening it to being in a popcorn popper. This metaphor also speaks to the disconnection between science and society, science and social impact, and science and the planet. A secondary effect is the loss of opportunities for change within the systems of science, keeping unworkable approaches and unjust practices entrenched in the ivory tower.
