The Qin Warriors are also known as the Chinese Terracotta Warriors. Here I show the Mask from my ceramic wall hanging. The mask which is about a foot high (30cm) is one piece of the three, which make up the wall hanging. I thought it might be interesting to show how the freshly glazed mask transforms during the kiln firing process. The earthenware clay and glaze are raised in temperature through a controlled firing process. The cooling process is also controlled to prevent thermal shock. The result of this metamorphoses can be seen in the powdery painted on glaze transforming into a glass hard finish. This transformation in the kiln would generally take about 24 hours and a rise in temperature of nearly 1100 degrees celsius. Art, science and technology working in harmony. Never ceases to amaze me.
