Present Perfect Tense vs Past Simple Tense. Intermediate level learners.
Tense and aspect are apparently two major issues in language teaching (Bardovi-Harlig, 2000). A lot of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners fail to master tense and aspect even though they spend substantial amount of time in order to master them (Rahman, Ali, 2015).
Particularly, many non-native speakers are confused about uses and differences between Past Perfect Tense and Present Simple Tense when referring to events or actions in the past.
Collins (2007) posits that teachers ought to place ‘greater’ focus on the ‘tenses’ in which learners are usually ‘confused’ for example, ‘simple past’, ‘present perfect’ and ‘present progressive’, etc. Teachers can help the EFL learners to overcome the problems by focusing on the contexts (Rahman, Ali, 2015).
Why is it so confusing? The reason might be how we refer to the past in our native languages.
Apart from EFL learners’ problems in tense, sometimes they also have problems in understanding how they need to see an event-aspect (Rahman, Ali, 2015).
I have found the easiest approach to explain the differences between Present Perfect and Past Simple Tenses is to focus on Present Perfect Tense and emphasize the connection to the present moment, now. We use Present Perfect Tense to express events that have happened in the past but still have some connection to the present. Whereas Past Simple Tense is used to express actions that happened in the past and have no relationship with the present moment.
