Basin Arts is pleased to feature TEAM (The Emerging Artist Mentorship) program as part of our gallery programming. The TEAM program is focused on offering guidance and mentorship to a selected group of emerging artists of varied disciplines within the Lafayette community who have been selected via an application process.

Just Play is result of T.E.A.M.’s five-week long collaboration across four different disciplines. This exhibition opened on June 8, 2019 for Downtown Lafayette’s Second Saturday Artwalk. The 2019 TEAM program is supported in part by funds from the Bonin Award facilitated by the Acadiana Center for the Arts.

About Just Play...

"We have established this body of work as a public space of refuge—one where the audience must dispose of their social anxieties in order to feel truly happy in its embrace. This is achieved through a fusion of common household objects, soft fabric, atmospheric musical compositions, bold lighting fixtures, and choreographed movements of the human body. The resulting work fixates on the uncomfortable joy of pursuing safety, with brightly-colored and eccentric forms paired with familiar objects to create an uneasy harmony. This amalgamation of multiple media exudes a feeling of contentment for the audience to enjoy.

All four of us censor much of our individual personalities when in public settings. We fear being ridiculed for failing to adhere to established social expectations, causing us to sacrifice our abilities to express ourselves. The risk of being hurt when any one of us puts our individuality on full display can be paralyzing. It is through the creation of art, however, that we feel safe enough to be intentionally vulnerable. With this body of work, we give the audience the freedom to feel the same way—the freedom to just play."
