Sultan of Coins
I understand my work to be about the politics of image, past and present. By juxtaposing archival images and contemporary found material, I ask questions about technology, media, pop culture, and representation.
I understand all of these to be of political significance. In this video, I utilize a super-8 film made in 1970 in Iran by my uncle and his friends. After watching their work several times, I noticed that their emulation of B-movies is particularly inspired by Bruce Lee films. Their work represented a significant moment in the history of popular images in Iran in the 1970s.
In my work, I intercut their film with recent footage of people in Iran protesting the embezzlement of their savings by banks owned by people close to the government. These videos, shot by phone cameras, stand in sharp contrast to the super-8 footage of my uncle. Yet, the former is equally a representative of contemporary mode of popular image, as the videos are primarily shot to be distributed through popular social network channels. The fact that both material share an overlapping subject matter--money theft--is uncanny.
