‘From written text to modern technology, ‘Steal Me A While’ asks whether disparate forms of art can work harmoniously and effect the user positively.’

What difference is there in the way we consume art in 2021? Can these differences have an effect on the mood of the consumer? These are questions ‘Steal Me A While’ aims to induce the audience into pondering.

In terms of aesthetic influences and inspirations, the 2018 film Eighth Grade (dir. Bo Burnham) made use of light sourced from screens (iPhones, laptops, etc.), in particular the light from a phone reflecting onto an individual’s face in a way that I aim to replicate within my film. This is to reinforce the alienating and overwhelming presence of screens in daily life. When it comes to colour, the 2016 film First Girl I Loved (dir. Kerem Sanga) uses strong hues of singular colour to indicate character mood and headspace, an effect I also aim to replicate through coloured illumination and shadow. Overall, Steal Me A While aims to question why and how we have normalised art that relies on degraded attention spans, and how long form art and experience (often that derived from novels) is forgotten in the year 2021.

In this way my smartphone film aims to induce the experience of reflection, particularly when it comes to the individual viewer. It aims to allow the viewer to question whether technology has squandered or enhanced their understanding and appreciation of written art, and whether the existence of one diminishes or challenges the other.
