Black & Veatch designed, procured and constructed a microgrid for Shell Technology Center in Houston, which is using it to generate power while it also serves as a working test lab to explore advancements in renewable energy.

TRANSCRIPT:

Ajay Mehta, Shell's General Manager of New Energies Research & Technology
"We know that the energy system is changing, and inside Shell, we are trying to figure out, what type of projects are we going to be building in the future and there’s no better way to do that other than learning it ourselves by doing it on site."

Jason Abiecunas, AVP and Director of Distributed Energy Resources, Black & Veatch
"The Shell microgrid project was set up to help the New Energies Business launch new businesses and technologies. So we brought together solar PV, battery energy storage, reciprocating engine, our advanced controls platform and the ASSET360 platform to deliver this microgrid that serves as a platform for demonstration that pushes microgrid technology forward with Shell."

Sonya Vial, Shell's Process Research & Development Team Lead, Biofuels
"One of the great things about the microgrid is we can test all of these different components before we test them out where it really impacts our customers. The team can analyze the data and then make recommendations to solve problems that we’re seeing in the deployment of these kind of connected energy systems by the business."

Dustin Rogge, Project Manager, Black & Veatch
"It seems like every other month that there’s something that’s coming out that looks interesting, might actually win in the space. It’s exciting and fun to play with. We’ve had a really good time collaborating with them because they want to learn and we get to learn along with them and it seems like we’re synergistic doing it."

Jon LaFollett, Shell's Energy System Integration and Storage Program Lead
"Because research projects require so much flexibility, and you’re trying things that have never been done before, it sometimes can be difficult to land on the right technical requirements, but Black & Veatch did a good job of helping us understand what the implications of our flexibility requirements would be on the final design, so that we could land on the right system, the right design, that has given us all the flexibility we would want to test out different scenarios."

Jason Abiecunas, AVP and Director of Distributed Energy Resources, Black & Veatch
"I’m really proud of the collaborative relationship that was formed with our client, Shell. It’s been wonderful to see that collaboration continue after the project went commercial in terms of testing use cases, in terms of bring new equipment onto project as part of the microgrid and in looking together at what comes next."

Ajay Mehta, Shell's General Manager of New Energies Research & Technology
"It’s allowed us to showcase what we are capable of doing as we carve out a unique position for ourselves in the space of new energies."
