This video showcases the final prototype for Noise Censorship, our sound installation.

C O N C E P T

Our goal was to create a sound installation which highlights the duality of over-consumption:

Being encouraged to buy new clothes at the expense of low-cost labour and environmental / economic destruction in developing nations.

As metropolitan citizens of a developed country, we rarely face the burden of our own mass consumption. Collectively, we buy and discard clothing and electronics without a second thought, but we’re rarely faced with the reality of where our waste goes, and how it is produced.

Most of us have never worked in a sweatshop or visited a landfill, yet many in developing countries do, and even import our textile waste.

I N S T A L L A T I O N

The installation consists of six speakers on stands that are placed in a circle, with their respective Arduino-powered sewing machine pedals. When the pedals are not pressed, each speaker plays an advertisement. When they are pressed, an underlying narrative on the true costs of consumerism is slowly unveiled with music, sound effects, and narration about the exploitative and violent nature of sweatshops, the 2013 Rana Plaza collapse in Bangladesh, and how our donated clothing and textile waste is sold to African countries like Kenya, to the detriment of their local textile markets.

V I D E O D E S C R I P T I O N

Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we weren't able to set up actual speakers with pedals. We've instead opted to showcase the concept through Touch Designer, a node based visual programming language for multimedia content, and Isadora, a graphic programming environment.

This video shows a 4 speaker iteration to account for keyboard ghosting.
