Desire: A Sankofa Dream is a live (real-time), online, site-responsive and participatory, evening-length multidisciplinary artwork in the tradition of Black science fiction. Desire takes place within a metaphoric kaleidoscope wherein Black queer humans have shape-shifting unicorns as ancestors; those unicorns have come back to remind humans of our possibilities and agency. Performance-conjurers and witness-participants have much choice as they traverse various parts of the kaleidoscope to remember their choice-making potential. The performance-ritual is built around Black Queer survival techniques such as place-claiming and world-building. Unique every time it is offered, witness-participants and choreographer/writer/community organizer Maria Bauman reimagine Desire for each new community that invites the work, in the tradition of the Radical Faeirie network and of Black & Brown queer youth claiming and co-creating Christopher Street Pier in NYC. With Desire: A Sankofa Dream, Bauman, her company MBDance, and the community of witness-participants conjure new methods for dancing and speaking with, through and in spite of the possibilities and obstacles of distance and oppressions—a site of agency, world-building and choice-making.More information at desire.mbdance.net
