In some ways the work on the Big Backyard Gallery started almost a century ago. The butterflies and moths we will display were collected in the neighborhood of the Bruce Museum by pioneering Bruce Museum Curator, Paul Griswold Howes, in 1935 and 1936. They provide a snapshot of butterfly emergence in the early part of the twentieth century. Most of these species are still seen at the same time of year today. Sadly, some have been wiped out: the regal fritillary is now extinct in Connecticut. Others are facing threats from loss of host plants, pesticides, and climate change. The Bruce team is proud to be carrying on this tradition of preserving a record of the natural world via our collections. Our Exhibitions team is working with great skill to make sure our models accurately reflect the amazing variety of forms seen in these real-life wonders.
