TEACHING SUGGESTIONS

This song provides a rousing rock ‘n’ roll burst of energy to reinforce positive feelings about school. Students can sing, dance and clap along with the song.

Teachers could draw the children's attention to the syncopation in the refrain, particularly triplets on “Thursday, Friday, too…”. Notice, too, that the melody line on the phrase “school is number one” doesn’t simply go down the scale, it misses a note of that scale, which makes it musically more interesting.

Teachers could encourage the children to identify the rock ‘n’ roll instruments playing on the track, and to echo the saxophone riff, using different vocalisations (for example, “ba ba ba ba ba”, ‘na na na na na”, or “da da da da da”). The children may also play along with the drummer, beating out the rhythm with their feet or hands.

Classes may like to try some simple rock ‘n’ roll steps to the song. For example, swing from side to side, swing out and back, turn your partner round.
