I will be focusing this on Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). As you can see, MCPS is the largest school district in Maryland, with 208 schools. It’s amazing that MCPS students are from all around the world, and of many different backgrounds. I will be focusing a Professional Development Plan on my school, Garrett Park Elementary.

Technology is being used all around the globe to enhance instruction. Already, at Garrett Park Elementary School there is technology in most classrooms, with a desktop computer, Promethean Board, Projector, and a class set of Chromebooks. The teachers are already convinced that technology always, or at least most of the time enhances their instruction or improves student learning! And that is why we are all here, to help our students learn better!

My survey to the teachers at Garrett Park Elementary School showed that even though they believe technology makes learning better, they are not able to use it well in the classroom.

As you see in the results of this question, teachers have not been provided the training necessary for them to use technology to improve student learning.

Teachers are in desperate need of training in essential technology such as the Google Suite and the software that is used for their Promethean Boards in lessons every day.

We all know that teachers have very little spare time, and yet these teachers almost all said that they voluntarily want training in these academic areas to better their technology integration! That in itself is compelling!

To keep it short, teachers need additional training to do what’s necessary in their jobs. Teachers want to improve student learning, but first they have to understand the technology themselves and understand how to keep students managed safely online. Only then can teachers help students create, explore, and develop skills across multiple subject areas.

Imagine what this professional Development can do! Teaching can become more engaging for all students. Technology opens the door for increased accessibility so that all students can learn in a way that meets their needs! Teachers of various levels of technology knowledge will come together like never before to create technology and content rich lessons for kids that help all students receive more equal opportunities!

There are a lot of challenges that my training plan will give teachers the skills to overcome! The largest challenges are technology management and training on hardware and software- all of which will be taught in detail so that teachers can start using technology to benefit our students!

My training plan is based upon some of the most rigorous and well-research standards in our country. The professional development will first and foremost be based upon Common Core and ISTE standards for students to center all the learning around helping our students use digital tools in ways that are positive, safe, creative, and meaningful. The ISTE Educator standards will help give teachers skills they need to interact with technology tools to design effective lessons.

The goals for the training are for teachers to feel comfortable using technology in their classroom, feel equipped to monitor students using technology, and start using new resources and tools to create rich learning experiences for their students. Using the TPACK model, teachers will be trained in how to use the technology, so that they may use it to teach the content. Teachers will develop lessons, units, and projects that incorporate technology in ways that support students of all levels and abilities.

My 5-day plan covers learning to overcome the needs and challenges teachers had so that they leave the training not only with new knowledge but with hands-on practice and ready-to-use new teaching materials.

This training benefits all the staff of varied abilities and ages, from grade level teachers to specialists. The training will be offered in-person for credit, as most teachers preferred, and there will also be an option to tune into the classes online live or watch a video of a recorded session, as many other teachers preferred. Check-ins and smaller training will occur throughout the year to follow up and extend as needed so that the learning continues!

I formulated the budget to only consist of what is absolutely necessary to keep costs down. All we are in need of is quality instructors and the rest is taken care of by the school!

Remember, it’s not about us- it’s all about the kids, and we know effective technology use and integration will benefit them much more than teachers lacking training and confidence, so let’s do this!
