James graduated from Morehouse College and obtained his doctorate in Chemical Physics from Harvard in 2011. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology, he is now at Dartmouth College as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and an adjunct faculty in the Department of Chemistry. Professor Whitfield and his group work on novel computing approaches to electronic structure with an emphasis on physical simulations using quantum computers. He also maintains an active involvement in the quantum education community. Additionally, he serves on the advisory board at IBM-HBCU Quantum Center and at Qubit By Qubit and is currently an Amazon Visiting Academic.
