Speculative designers like to talk about the problems we face now by designing the 'products of the possible future'. It is a very utopian idea that you can address a problem with a product like a sticking plaster and then the work is done, maybe in the future, we will fix it for real. Take the example I have made here, the concept of needing glasses that create an image of a greener world to lighten your mood is amusing and startlingly possible, we already use digital-tech like face filters to augment our everyday experiences and identities; why not our everyday environment too. We know instinctively that this idea is actually rooted in a number of much deeper problems we face today and in the future, such as livable cities, environmental emergency, and how we might envision our co-existence with technology in relation with the natural world in the future. There is no one size fits all solution, are we too focussed on profitable futures?
