Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed few amendments to the country’s constitution, that include upholding the concepts of traditional marriage and Faith in God. A public vote on the proposed amendments will take place on April 22. The above mentioned proposals were prepared by a working group. It was approved by the lower house of the parliament last month. Second reading of the proposed amendments is set to take place on March 10. In a statement released by the Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin which said that "The president's amendments are the result of his dialogue with representatives of all factions (and) civil society." Vladimir Putin has been a vocal defender of traditional Christian values since his ascension to the presidency.
Pontifical universities take precautionary measures against Covid-19
Following the Italian Government directives on Covid-19 outbreak, Pontifical Universities in Rome have been closed for 10 days starting from March 5th. Italian government announced the closing of all schools and universities on March 4th. Following the orders, Pontifical universities of Rome and Vatican accredited theology and philosophy schools will remain closed. The virus has killed at least 107 people in Italy. 3090 cases have been reported across the country.
Abducted Nigerian priest released by his captors
Fr. David Echioda, a Nigerian priest who was abducted recently has been released by his captors. The state police has confirmed the news. Fr. David was serving in the diocese of Otukpo. He was kidnapped on his way back home last Sunday, while he was returing after celebrating Mass at Utonkon. The Catholic Church in Nigeria has been undergoing severe religious persecution over a long period of time. Michael Nnadi, a Catholic seminarian was recently murdered in Nigeria.
Released because of Jesus: Asia Bibi
Last week, Asia Bibi was in Paris for the promotion of her autobiography Enfin Libre (Free at Last). Talking about her imprisonment, Asia shared her deep faith in Christ. She said that learning from our life experiences would make our faith stronger. Asia shared how patience and hope filled her heart that she would be certainly released one day as she was innocent. She recalled how at baptism the priest told her parents that she would be tested by God and she believes her time in prison was that test. She also thanked people around the globe who interceded for her. Asia Bibi is a Pakistani Catholic who was falsely accused of blasphemy in 2010. She was sentenced to death and spent more than 8 years in solitary confinement. The Supreme Court of Pakistan pronounced her innocent on October 31st 2018. She and her family are now living in Canada.
Cardinal Nichols welcomes 400 Candidates and Catechumens to Westminster Cathedral
Cardinal Vincent Nichols welcomed 400 men and women to Westminster Cathedral for the Rite of Election held on 29 February and 1 March. During the ceremony, the 198 Catechumens publicly declared their desire to receive Baptism, the Holy Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation in the Catholic Church. The 202 candidates who have been baptised also publicly announced their wish to complete their initiation into Catholic Church during the Easter vigil by receiving the sacraments of Holy Eucharist and Confirmation. The Catechumens and Candidates will receive the Holy Sacraments in their respective parishes during the Easter Vigil. Cardinal Vincent will celebrate mass for the new Catholics on 23 rd May, 6.00 pm at Westminster Cathedral, London.
