Note: I'll come back and complete my Semester 2 uploads when my 500mb weekly limit reloads.

After a stressful couple of weeks of uncertainty, I decided that I would be a lot safer going to my mums in the Orkney Islands to quarantine, rather than staying in university halls (with shared toilet and bathroom facilities). I didn't really need to be studying a course in Actuarial Risk Management to analyse the "risk" of this scenario, but it certainly helps!

I'm very surprised that the university never shut their facilities entirely, as I personally believe the "learning commons" are hotspots for the spread of a contagious disease like coronavirus. How can you justify cancelling exams, but leave the university facitilies open? Exam settings are somewhat "static" because it's one person per desk and you aren't allowed to move. Desks could be spread out further apart and thoroughly wiped down after each exam. Compare that to the learning commons when there is so much interchanging of the students. Add on top of that the risk from my halls having shared toilet/bathroom and I conclude that I was probably one of the most "at risk" people of catching the virus.

I have transferred from that situatuon to a situatuon where I am probably in one of the least "at risk" groups. As far as I am aware, there still hasn't been a recorded case of coronavirus in the Orkney Isles and even if there is, I am pretty much housebound now for the foreseeable. I have read a lot of articles recently of people fleeing for the Highlands and Islands, so hopefully the government put some controls in place to keep my risk of infection as low as possible.

Now I am in Orkney it's great analysing the past 2 weeks and it's crazy how the human brain thinks. At the time of deciding whether to come up to Orkney, the University had not made a decision what was happening and I was genuinely going to stay in Edinburgh. It's crazy how much I was putting my degree at the forefront of my thoughts and that's really what has scared me the most in this situatuon and got me thinking about whether I have sacrificed the prime years of my life for the wrong reason.
